On April 19, the rotor model of a 400MW, 500rpm variable-speed pumped-storage unit, independently developed by Harbin Electric Machinery Company Limited (a subsidiary of Harbin Electric Corporation), completed the runaway test and passed the on-site acceptance by the owner, with all performance indicators meeting design requirements. This marks another major breakthrough for Harbin Electric in the core technology field of large variable-speed generator-motors, taking a solid step toward engineering application of the prototype.
Compared with the 300MW, 428.6rpm variable-speed pumped-storage unit, the design standards for the 400MW, 500rpm unit are higher. Among them, four key indicators—rated speed, design assessment runaway speed, maximum peripheral speed, and centrifugal acceleration at the rotor rim—set new world records.
The rotor model runaway test is a critical step in verifying the safety and reliability of large variable-speed pumped-storage generator-motor rotors. During the development process, the team continuously optimized the model structure and assembly techniques, overcoming a series of technical challenges including structural design, new material development, precision manufacturing, and prototype testing, thereby providing scientific and reliable experimental data support for the rotor structural design.
