One axle, which used to take workers half a day manually, can now be processed intelligently in just 12 minutes. Doesn't that sound a bit incredible?

During the busiest season for grain outbound transport in Heilongjiang, China, a series of visible and tangible digital "black technologies" along the Harbin Railway front line have transformed traditional freight car inspection yards into modern smart workshops, installing a powerful safety engine for the "North Grain to South Transport" artery.

In the first quarter of this year, Harbin Railway shipped 9.15 million tons of grain, a year-on-year surge of 94%, with high-density freight trains shuttling back and forth. While the pressure to ensure safety is at its peak, smart equipment has already become the main force on the front line, with new quality productive forces taking root on the Longjiang railway lines.

Walking into the wheel-axle maintenance workshop of the Harbin Depot, robotic arms precisely rise and fall, intelligent conveyor lines move in an orderly manner, and CNC lathes operate fully enclosed. The scenes of flying iron filings and manual lifting and carrying have completely become history. This workshop undertakes the heavy maintenance responsibility for 16,000 freight cars on main lines such as Binzhou, Binbei, and Suijia, serving as the most solid backbone for the safe operation of grain trains.

"The design service life of a freight car wheel axle is about 22 years. Any damage during operation must be repaired promptly, and vehicles are never allowed to run with defects," wheel-axle fitter Liu Guodong told reporters. In the past, it all relied on manual cranking for fixing, measuring with rulers, and working based on experience; now, as soon as an axle enters the workshop, information is recorded throughout the process, the system automatically determines the plan, and enclosed processing is both safe and clean.

In the axle processing area, processing a single axle takes only 12 minutes, doubling the efficiency compared to the past. Five robotic arms work in coordination, with heavy and dangerous tasks all taken over by machines, allowing workers to simply monitor easily from the control console.

This intelligent system was independently developed by Harbin National Railway Technology. Project leader Lang Haijing explained: "Previously, equipment was dispersed and operated independently; if one link got stuck, the entire line had to wait. Now, with full-domain linkage and data interoperability, over 200 pieces of equipment operate 'with one heart,' achieving a qualitative leap in efficiency." Currently, this solution has been promoted in many depots nationwide.

In the 5T application workshop, AI intelligent security inspection stands guard non-stop. As trains pass through the inspection shed, 360-degree cameras capture images in real-time, and the system quickly scans for a "physical check-up," leaving small hazards nowhere to hide, with accuracy far exceeding manual inspection.

Coupler maintenance has seen even greater changes. A coupler weighs 80 jin, and this used to be the most physically demanding position. After the six-axis robot was deployed, it grabs, flips, and assembles in one smooth operation. "In the past, it took 3 people 40 minutes; now, 1 person can finish it in 15 minutes, saving labor and improving safety," said Xin Bingbing, foreman of the maintenance workshop.

Digital intelligence empowerment extends from the workshops to the front line of marshalling. At Harbin South Station, two "Big White" uncoupling robots have gained numerous fans. With a cute appearance and tremendous strength, they accurately lock onto the uncoupling lever, steadily exert force to overcome resistance, and move cleanly and decisively. With a recognition accuracy rate exceeding 95% and efficiency improved by nearly 50%, they have become the capable mainstays of the marshalling yard.

With the support of these hardcore black technologies, Harbin Railway's maintenance support is more stable, faster, and stronger, ensuring the "North Grain to South Transport" artery remains unimpeded all the way!
