Dimension News, Polish natural gas transmission operator GAZ-SYSTEM has named the country's first Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) "Solidarity". The unit has a capacity of 170,000 cubic meters and is expected to arrive in the Gulf of Gdańsk by the end of 2027, with regasification services commencing from the first quarter of 2028.
The FSRU was launched in May this year at the Ulsan shipyard of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea. The vessel, measuring 294 meters in length and 46 meters in width, is currently undergoing outfitting, system integration, and testing before delivery.
The naming of "Solidarity" reflects the history of Gdańsk and the project's expected role in regional energy cooperation and supply resilience.
Japanese shipping group Mitsui O.S.K. Lines is providing the unit through its subsidiary White Eagle Energy Ltd, based on a 15-year charter agreement signed in April 2024. The contract includes options for renewal and the right for GAZ-SYSTEM to purchase the vessel.
The FSRU will be deployed approximately 3 kilometers offshore, connected to Poland's national gas transmission network via a subsea pipeline and a new approximately 250-kilometer onshore pipeline between Gdańsk and Gustorzyn.
The terminal has an annual regasification capacity of 6.1 billion cubic meters. Polish energy group ORLEN has booked all available capacity under a 15-year agreement signed in August 2023.
GAZ-SYSTEM is also developing a second FSRU in the Gulf of Gdańsk, following demand exceeding available capacity during the open season process. Its planned annual capacity has been increased from 4.5 billion to 6.1 billion cubic meters.
Once the second FSRU is completed, Poland will have three LNG terminals—the onshore facility at Świnoujście and two FSRUs in the Gulf of Gdańsk—with a total regasification capacity exceeding 20 billion cubic meters per year.
GAZ-SYSTEM is a joint-stock company wholly owned by the Polish State Treasury, headquartered in Warsaw. The company operates the Baltic Pipe, owns the Świnoujście LNG terminal, and controls natural gas storage operator Gas Storage Poland.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is a South Korean shipbuilder under the HD Hyundai Group. Mitsui O.S.K. Lines is a Japanese shipping group, with White Eagle Energy as its project subsidiary. ORLEN is a Polish integrated energy group.
