Recently, the International Electrotechnical Commission officially released the international standard "Wearable electronic devices and technologies - Test method for surface electromyography sensors worn on the forearm and hand." The standard was proposed by Chinese experts, who also served as the project leader, and was jointly completed with experts from the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Finland, and other countries. It fills the international standard gap in testing methods for electromyography sensing smart wearable devices, and is an important achievement for China in the field of international standardization of wearable electronics.

Surface electromyography sensors worn on the forearm and hand are mainly used to extract surface electromyography signals from the skin, interpret movement intentions, and apply these signals to scenarios such as virtual reality, gaming, drones, robot control, and home automation. In recent years, wearable electromyography sensor technology has developed rapidly, and its application boundaries have continued to expand. However, the lack of unified specifications for the main performance parameters and testing methods of sensors has led to uneven product performance and made data accuracy difficult to evaluate, restricting the healthy development of the technology and market. The introduction of this standard responds to the urgent needs of the industry and provides a standard basis for the entire chain of sensor design, production, inspection, sales, and use.
The standard systematically specifies the definitions, classifications, test parameters, test procedures, and data processing methods for wearable surface electromyography sensors. The release and implementation of the standard will help regulate market order, ensure product quality and consumer rights, and promote coordination across the wearable electromyography sensor industry chain and the sustainable development of the industry.
