The high-speed power line carrier and wireless dual-mode communication technology spearheaded by the China Electric Power Research Institute has achieved a series of key breakthroughs, successfully establishing a complete dual-mode communication standards system. This has filled long-standing industry gaps in multiple fields, including fundamental theory, key algorithms, core components, hybrid scenario testing, and station area topology identification, laying a solid technical foundation for the upgrade of smart grid edge communication.

In response to pain points such as low independent controllability of core components, the lack of an industry testing system, and low efficiency in station area topology identification, the China Electric Power Research Institute joined forces with State Grid Shandong, Fujian, Chongqing, and Qinghai Electric Power, as well as Beijing Smartchip, to build a complete standards system covering interconnection protocols, core component design, inspection methods, and application protocols.
At the core technology level, the project innovatively developed dual-mode adaptive collaborative transmission technology, which leverages the transmission advantages of both power line carrier and wireless communication to achieve dynamic switching and collaborative operation between the two communication modes. The wireless transmission rate has been increased by 50 times, and the data collection frequency has been greatly raised from the original 96 times per day to 1,440 times, capable of supporting real-time business needs of massive terminals such as high-frequency electricity consumption information collection, status awareness, and fault alarms. Meanwhile, the project built China's first dual-mode communication unit verification assembly line, enabling automated batch testing of products, with an average annual verification volume increased by 40 times, effectively ensuring the quality consistency of products connected to the grid.
Up to now, more than 200 million dual-mode communication units have been installed and put into operation nationwide, covering 27 provincial-level electric power companies, driving more than a hundred communication unit manufacturers to carry out collaborative innovation, and opening up the complete industrial chain from technology research and development to large-scale implementation. According to statistics, this scientific and technological achievement has generated direct economic benefits of 2.24 billion yuan in the past three years. The related achievements have broken multiple foreign technology monopolies, significantly enhanced China's voice in the field of power Internet of Things communication, promoted China to become the lead formulator of international standards for dual-mode communication, and also provided a Chinese solution for the world's electricity consumption information collection communication technology.
