Wedoany.com Report-Mar 2, Vedanta, an India-based conglomerate specializing in natural resources and technology, has issued a global invitation for companies to express interest in constructing and supplying 5000 MWe of nuclear power capacity. The announcement, released on February 20, 2025, targets firms with expertise in designing, building, and operating nuclear facilities. The initiative aligns with India’s position as the fifth-largest and fastest-growing global economy, as well as the third-largest energy consumer, following the United States and China.

The company highlighted India’s significant thorium reserves, describing them as a unique advantage for establishing leadership in the global nuclear sector. Vedanta’s invitation states: "With this in view, Vedanta is inviting expressions of interest to build and operate 5000 MWe of nuclear power in India for captive use. We are looking for a globally recognised company with a proven track record of designing, building and operating nuclear plants to deliver an end-to-end turnkey project." Vedanta will facilitate the process by providing local permits, regulatory approvals, land, and infrastructure support.

As India’s largest producer of zinc, lead, silver, aluminum, iron ore, oil, gas, and ferro chrome, Vedanta also operates Vedanta Power, one of the country’s leading private power generators with a capacity of 9 GW. The call for expressions of interest follows recent developments in national policy. In early 2025, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman outlined plans in her budget speech to amend legislation, encouraging private-sector involvement in nuclear energy projects. This move supports India’s goal of achieving at least 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047.

Other Indian firms, including Tata Power and the Naveen Jindal Group, have also shown interest in pursuing nuclear energy, particularly through small modular reactors, reflecting a broader trend toward expanding the country’s nuclear capabilities. Vedanta’s project aims to secure a reliable energy supply for its operations while contributing to India’s sustainable energy framework. The company seeks a partner to handle all aspects of the nuclear project, from design to operation, ensuring efficiency and expertise in execution.

This initiative underscores India’s efforts to diversify its energy sources and leverage its natural resources, such as thorium, to meet growing demand. Vedanta’s outreach to global companies positions it as a key player in the nation’s evolving nuclear landscape, building on recent policy shifts to foster private-sector collaboration.
