en.Wedoany.com Reported - Anemoi Marine Technologies, together with its partners, has completed a joint development project aimed at simplifying the integration of rotor sail wind propulsion systems on Medium Range (MR) tankers. The project design has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from classification society DNV.

The project, carried out by Anemoi in collaboration with Guangzhou Shipyard International Company Limited (GSI) and tanker operator Hafnia, focuses on integrating two foldable explosion-proof rotor sails into the MR tanker design.

This approval provides shipowners with a proven design basis for installing wind-assisted propulsion systems on product tankers. In product tanker vessel types, deck space, cargo handling requirements, and safety considerations can complicate deployment.

The concept utilizes Anemoi's 5×35-meter foldable rotor sails, designed to meet explosion-proof safety requirements for hazardous areas on tanker decks. The project also developed a lightweight deck foundation that eliminates the need for reinforced under-deck structures while facilitating inspection and maintenance.

During the design package review, DNV assessed the handling of rotor sails under the International Maritime Organization's Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) frameworks before issuing the Approval in Principle.

The project demonstrates potential energy efficiency benefits while providing a practical pathway for adopting wind-assisted propulsion in the MR tanker sector.

Nick Contopoulos, Chief Production and Partnerships Officer at Anemoi, stated that completing this project represents a significant step for wind-assisted propulsion in the tanker sector. He noted that proving explosion-proof rotor sails can be efficiently and safely integrated with minimal structural impact on MR tankers provides shipowners with a clear, proven adoption pathway.
