en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Port of Rotterdam will develop 38 hectares of dedicated logistics infrastructure in the Europoort area to consolidate its position as Europe's main gateway for refrigerated and frozen agricultural products from South America. The project, named "Rotterdam Food Hub," will include the construction of a new port terminal, cold storage facilities, on-site energy infrastructure, and direct berths, aimed at optimizing the reception and distribution of goods for the European market.
The Port of Rotterdam Authority (Autoridad Portuaria de Róterdam) has signed agreements with Necron Group and PTP Group, which will be responsible for building the various facilities. The port authority will construct a terminal over 500 meters in length and a breakwater to protect maritime operations.
According to Boudewijn Siemons, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, the project will integrate infrastructure, storage, and logistics services in a strategic location, enhancing the port's ability to manage cargo flows more efficiently and sustainably.
The plans include the construction of two refrigerated and frozen warehouses by Necron Group—Necron Food Park I and II—with a total gross floor area of nearly 145,000 square meters. These facilities are designed for cold chain specialist operators and aim to meet Europe's growing demand for logistics solutions for perishable products. Necron will also develop an energy center to power the terminal and warehouses, ensuring the facilities are operational upon launch.
PTP Group will build a 73,000-square-meter terminal on the banks of the Caland Canal, equipped with three berths for sea-going and inland vessels, as well as waiting areas and logistics infrastructure to accelerate cargo transshipment. This facility will enhance the multimodal connectivity of the complex. Guillermo Misiano, CEO of PTP Group, emphasized that the project will directly integrate terminal, storage, and transport operations, helping to increase the share of maritime and inland waterway transport and reduce handling times for agricultural products.
In the coming months, the companies and the port authority will advance engineering studies and permit applications, with the goal of making a final investment decision in early 2027.
