en.Wedoany.com Reported - Independent power producer ContourGlobal has acquired the 500MW/2GWh (gigawatt-hour) Wallace battery energy storage project in Ayr, Scotland, from New Energy Partnership, marking the company's first entry into the UK market.

The Wallace project is reportedly one of the largest battery energy storage systems (BESS) currently under construction in Scotland, offering four hours of storage duration. The project can absorb electricity when renewable energy generation is surplus and discharge when the grid requires additional flexibility. Located behind a key transmission constraint boundary, the site is designed to support grid balancing and address the region's significant wind energy surplus.

By storage capacity, this new project will become the largest BESS project in ContourGlobal's portfolio. Last month, the company commissioned a hybrid asset in Chile, including 200MW and 1.3GWh of BESS. The company also plans to begin construction of a 360MW/1.4GWh hybrid solar-plus-storage project in Arizona, USA, in the coming months.

The Scottish project has obtained full planning permission, holds land options, and has achieved Gate 2 status under the UK's grid connection reform process. The project is expected to participate in upcoming UK capacity market auctions and engage in related contractual and commercial arrangements based on market interest in transmission access rights and market access options. The region's surplus renewable energy generation, cool climate, and growing demand for digital infrastructure are expected to further drive demand for projects that contribute to grid stability and reduce clean energy curtailment.

Antonio Cammisecra, CEO of ContourGlobal, stated that entering the UK is a key step in the company's strategy to become a leading independent power producer in renewable energy and energy storage. He noted that the UK has a world-class regulatory environment, a deeply liquid energy market, and an urgent need for flexible storage assets to support the integration of wind power capacity. He believes Scotland offers a compelling opportunity, where the region generates a significant renewable energy surplus but faces transmission bottlenecks, and large-scale battery storage is key to unlocking this value. He said ContourGlobal is adding the UK to its growing portfolio and looks forward to significantly expanding its presence in the region through a diversified pipeline of renewable energy generation and storage development opportunities.

Independent power producer ContourGlobal was acquired by US private equity firm KKR in 2022 for £1.75 billion ($2.18 billion) in an all-cash transaction.
