Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 6, Enercon has completed the installation of the prototype for its new E-175 EP5 E2 wind turbine in Wachendorf, Lower Saxony, Germany. This model, boasting a rated output of 7 MW, marks a significant advancement in the company’s direct drive technology. Enercon describes the turbine as a transformative step, laying the groundwork for future digital services and tailored customer solutions.

The E-175 EP5 E2 stands among the largest and most efficient onshore wind turbines available in Europe. It features a hybrid tower with a hub height of 162 metres and a rotor diameter of 175 metres, consistent with its predecessor. However, the new version delivers a notable boost in power and energy yield compared to the earlier 6 MW model, thanks to an innovative generator design. This generator, configured as an external rotor in the E2 variant, enhances performance significantly.

To address transportation challenges posed by its larger size, the generator is constructed in two separable halves. These are shipped from the factory to the site and assembled during installation, ensuring logistical efficiency. Moritz Rodenhausen, Enercon’s head of product management, highlighted its capabilities: “The E-175 EP5 is a 'smart' turbine that integrates numerous advanced technologies and functions for the first time in order to maximise efficiency and performance for our customers.”

The turbine offers flexible operating modes, allowing adjustments for either optimal energy output or reduced mechanical stress. These adaptable settings enable customisation to suit specific locations or operator needs. Rodenhausen added: “Added to this are advanced digitalisation technologies that open up new possibilities for our service and maintenance offering in the future – for example, planned maintenance, live data and turbine monitoring.” These features position the E-175 EP5 E2 as a top contender in its category, providing operators with enhanced benefits.

Enercon plans to showcase the E-175 EP5 at the Wind Europe 2025 trade fair in Copenhagen, scheduled for April 8 to 10. The turbine’s debut will highlight its role as a flagship product, combining cutting-edge design with practical digital solutions. With this prototype now operational, Enercon aims to set a new standard in onshore wind energy, offering both high yield and innovative service options to meet evolving industry demands.
