en.Wedoany.com Reported - On June 26, Bhutan's state-owned power generation company Druk Green Power Corp Ltd initiated the design and pre-construction contract for the 570MW Wangchhu Hydropower Project. Located downstream of the Tala Hydropower Station in the Chhukha region of Bhutan, this project is the first hydropower development to be advanced under the cooperation framework between DGPC and India's Adani Power.

The project company, Wangchhu Hydroelectric Power Ltd, has commissioned Germany's Lahmeyer International GmbH to undertake design consultancy work, with a contract value of 298.7 million Ngultrum. Lahmeyer will provide engineering design, technical review, construction support, and implementation consulting services for the Wangchhu Hydropower Project. The project company has also awarded a contract worth 1.27 billion Ngultrum to India's Hindustan Construction Company Ltd for the construction of the diversion tunnel, hydraulic gates, and upstream and downstream cofferdams.

Previously, the Wangchhu Hydropower Project had arranged for local Bhutanese contractors to build access roads, which are expected to be completed by November, paving the way for the main civil engineering contracting works to commence in late 2026. This hydropower project is part of a plan by DGPC and Adani Power to jointly identify, develop, and invest in up to 5GW of hydropower capacity in Bhutan. Subsequent progress will depend on pre-construction works, main contracts, and on-site construction arrangements.
