Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 8, The Port of Barcelona has introduced Ecocat Tres, a fully electric commuter ferry powered by Molabo’s ARIES i50 motors, enhancing sustainable transport options. This zero-emission vessel joins Bus Nàutic’s expanding electric fleet, connecting Drassanes and Llevant wharves. In its first three months, the service recorded over 125,000 eco-friendly trips. Operated by ALSA with support from the Port of Barcelona, it provides a green travel alternative for residents and tourists, reducing road traffic and air pollution in the city.

Spanish shipbuilder Metaltec Naval constructed Ecocat Tres, a 15-meter aluminum catamaran designed to carry up to 84 passengers. The ferry features a rooftop deck for additional seating and a pleasant ride across the port. It operates every 15 to 30 minutes for at least 12 hours daily, with each trip lasting about 10 minutes. Two 48V Molabo ARIES i50 motors power the vessel, delivering a top speed of 12 knots. At its standard cruising speed of 5 knots, it can operate for up to 21 hours on a single charge, ensuring dependable service.

The low-voltage design of Molabo’s motors enhances safety during maintenance compared to typical high-voltage systems. Passengers benefit from a quieter, smoother experience due to reduced noise and vibrations. Azimut Marine provided the propulsion and energy setup, including two 50 kW electric drives, 36 batteries totaling 216 kWh, fast chargers, and solar panels. These panels can supply up to 40% of the ferry’s energy, boosting efficiency.

Ecocat Tres is projected to lower CO2 emissions by approximately 90 tons annually, supporting Barcelona’s environmental objectives. Port of Barcelona president José Antonio Carbonell stated: “This 100% electric, zero-emission passenger ferry is helping us reshape mobility in the port and accelerate the decarbonization of our operations.” The initiative reflects a commitment to cleaner urban transport.

This launch strengthens the Port of Barcelona’s efforts to promote sustainable mobility, offering an efficient and environmentally friendly option for commuters while aligning with broader climate goals.
