Perenco Completes UK’s First CO2 Injection Test for CCS

Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 11, The UK has achieved a significant milestone with the successful completion of its first Carbon Dioxide (CO2) injection test for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). This accomplishment, led by Perenco UK and supported by Petrodec, marks a key step toward the nation's decarbonization strategy. The test involved injecting CO2 into a depleted natural gas reservoir in the Southern North Sea, demonstrating the feasibility and effectiveness of CCS technology.

Petrodec's ERDA, the first UK rig to achieve an approved safety case for CO2 injection support, has successfully completed its deployment from the Leman 27H platform. This end-of-test phase was carried out by the Project Poseidon Joint Venture, comprising Perenco UK, Carbon Catalyst Ltd, and Harbour Energy. The operation was executed safely and efficiently, with 15 injection cycles performed into the Leman gas field, mobilizing 11 CO2 offshore batch refills. The results obtained are of exceptional quality, providing valuable data for future CCS projects.

This milestone not only validates the potential of CO2 storage in depleted gas reservoirs but also highlights the role of the energy sector in unlocking cost-effective projects.
