Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 17, The naming and delivery ceremony for the CMA CGM Seine, a 220,000 dwt dual-fuel containership, occurred in Shanghai. Chinese officials described it as the world’s largest dual-fuel vessel, emphasizing its advanced design and efficient construction by Hudong-Zhonghua Changxing Shipbuilding. It is the first of four ultra-large vessels ordered by CMA CGM in this class.
Capacity was increased and efficiency improved for what CSSC calsl the largest LNG-fueled containership
Measuring 399 meters long and 61.3 meters wide, the CMA CGM Seine improves efficiency compared to the CMA CGM Jacques Saade class. Its LNG-fueled engines and 18,600 cbm MARK III LNG tank enable a 19,500-nautical-mile range, reducing emissions by 20 percent and nearly eliminating sulfur oxides and particulate matter. The vessel meets IMO Tier III standards. Cargo capacity reaches 23,876 TEU, including 2,200 reefer slots, with boxes stackable up to 24 layers. Enhanced fire safety systems improve cargo operations.
Liu Xuedong, deputy general manager of Hudong-Zhonghua Changxing Shipbuilding, stated: “From the start of construction to undocking at the pier, the time has been compressed to 4–5 months, significantly ahead of the original construction cycle. This ship was delivered more than six months early, with cycle control at a leading level in the shipbuilding industry.” This efficiency highlights the shipyard’s advanced capabilities.
The CMA CGM Seine will serve the Far East to Europe route, facilitating global trade with improved efficiency. Hudong-Zhonghua has delivered 17 containerships to CMA CGM, including 12 LNG-fueled vessels, and has 20 ships under construction with orders valued at $19.6 billion. In 2024, CMA CGM received 12 LNG-fueled vessels as part of a $20 billion investment in LNG and methanol-powered ships. The company aims to have 153 vessels using low-carbon fuels, such as biogas, biomethanol, and synthetic fuels, within a fleet of approximately 670 ships and 100 additional orders.
This delivery underscores the partnership between CMA CGM and Chinese shipbuilders to advance sustainable maritime transport, integrating innovative design and environmental efficiency to meet global shipping needs.
