en.Wedoany.com Reported - On July 4, 2026, the New South Wales Government launched an AUD 12 billion train manufacturing investment plan, proposing to build a new state-owned train manufacturing facility in the Hunter region. This train manufacturing investment will establish a long-term passenger train production pipeline, with private manufacturers operating the relevant factories, providing local manufacturing capacity for future rolling stock renewal in New South Wales.

According to the plan, the site selection for the new facility is currently being evaluated between a former coal mine site in Teralba and the Broadmeadow Locomotive Depot, with due diligence and stakeholder consultation required before finalization. The train manufacturing investment is expected to support a manufacturing cycle of over 30 years. After the production of the new Tangara trains, it will subsequently connect with the replacement of the Millennium and OSCAR fleets in the 2040s, as well as the renewal of the Waratah fleet in the 2050s.

This train manufacturing investment is expected to generate up to 780 jobs during the construction phase and create 550 long-term positions within the facility and its supply chain. The New South Wales Government has also established two production lines for the Tangara life extension project at the Cardiff rail facility, with a project scale of AUD 447 million. Subsequent work includes final site selection, the expression of interest process, and preparation of manufacturing contracts.
