en.Wedoany.com Reported - On July 6, Karine Herviou, Deputy Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), visited the Southwestern Institute of Physics (SWIP), accompanied by relevant officials from the China Atomic Energy Authority. Chen Qingchuan, Vice President of SWIP, received the delegation.

During the exchange, Chen Qingchuan welcomed the delegation led by Karine Herviou and introduced SWIP's development history, key technological achievements, and the progress of the IAEA Collaborating Centre. He noted that SWIP plans to conduct burning plasma experiments in 2027 and is steadily advancing the construction of its nuclear security system and physical protection system in accordance with China's nuclear security laws and regulations. SWIP is willing to deepen practical cooperation with the IAEA, engaging in in-depth exchanges on the forward-looking layout of fusion nuclear security regulations and standards to support the safe development of global fusion energy.

Karine Herviou highly commended SWIP's achievements in fundamental fusion research, device operation, international cooperation, and nuclear security. She stated that this visit deepened her understanding of SWIP's fusion research capabilities and nuclear security progress, and that SWIP's professional recommendations on future fusion reactor policies and standards will provide important references for the IAEA's next steps in nuclear security. She looks forward to more SWIP experts participating in the formulation of relevant IAEA policies and standards, providing professional technical support for global nuclear safety and sustainable development.

During the visit, the delegation toured the Fusion Science and Technology Exhibition Hall, the In-Vessel Component Development Center, and the Heating Technology Research and Development Center, gaining detailed insights into SWIP's progress and future plans in key technology research and development, engineering achievements, and nuclear security capability building.

Jiang Fuming, Director of the Division of Coordination of the IAEA Department of Nuclear Safety and Security, relevant staff from the China Atomic Energy Authority, and personnel from SWIP's International Cooperation Department participated in the exchange.
