The decision, tied to Shell’s global portfolio management, affects the Col 5, Purple Angel, and Fuerte Sur blocks, where gas discoveries include Kronos-1, Purple Angel 1, Gorgon 1 and 2, and Glaucus 1. Ecopetrol is prioritizing these viable projects to ensure a stable medium-term gas supply for Colombia.
The company is exploring options to maintain the continuity of these initiatives, focusing on the Gorgon development project. Ecopetrol aims to complete the project’s maturation and socio-environmental assessments by mid-2029, with production targeted to begin between 2031 and 2032. A spokesperson stated: “Ecopetrol is evaluating connection options with the National Transportation System to commercialize gas from Gorgon and meet national demand.” These efforts aim to integrate the gas resources into Colombia’s energy grid, supporting domestic needs.
Ecopetrol and Shell continue their partnership in other ventures, including the Gato do Mato field in Brazil, alongside Total Energies, with significant investments planned for 2025.
