Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 28, Ecopetrol S.A. has launched a collaborative strategy to secure the future of gas projects in Colombia’s Southern Caribbean after Shell announced its withdrawal from offshore assets in the region. The decision, tied to Shell’s global portfolio management, affects the Col 5, Purple Angel, and Fuerte Sur blocks, where gas discoveries include Kronos-1, Purple Angel 1, Gorgon 1 and 2, and Glaucus 1. Ecopetrol is prioritizing these viable projects to ensure a stable medium-term gas supply for Colombia.

The company is exploring options to maintain the continuity of these initiatives, focusing on the Gorgon development project. Ecopetrol aims to complete the project’s maturation and socio-environmental assessments by mid-2029, with production targeted to begin between 2031 and 2032. A spokesperson stated: “Ecopetrol is evaluating connection options with the National Transportation System to commercialize gas from Gorgon and meet national demand.” These efforts aim to integrate the gas resources into Colombia’s energy grid, supporting domestic needs.

Ecopetrol and Shell continue their partnership in other ventures, including the Gato do Mato field in Brazil, alongside Total Energies, with significant investments planned for 2025. This collaboration underscores Ecopetrol’s commitment to advancing energy projects while navigating Shell’s strategic shift in the Caribbean. An Ecopetrol representative noted: “Ecopetrol and Shell remain partners and, together with Total Energies, are advancing the development of the Gato Do Mato field in Brazil.”

The Southern Caribbean gas discoveries are critical for Colombia’s energy transition, with natural gas serving as a key fuel to bridge renewable energy adoption. Ecopetrol’s proactive measures aim to safeguard the development of these resources, ensuring their economic and technical viability. The company is assessing infrastructure solutions to connect the Gorgon project to national markets, enhancing energy security and supporting industrial growth.

Ecopetrol’s focus on the Caribbean reflects its broader strategy to develop sustainable energy resources. The company is committed to maintaining the momentum of these projects despite Shell’s exit, prioritizing long-term gas supply stability. By addressing socio-environmental requirements and planning for production in the early 2030s, Ecopetrol is positioning the Southern Caribbean as a vital component of Colombia’s energy landscape.

These initiatives highlight Ecopetrol’s dedication to balancing energy demands with environmental considerations. The company’s efforts to advance the Gorgon project and explore transportation solutions demonstrate its role in fostering a reliable and sustainable energy future for Colombia, leveraging strategic partnerships and regional resources.
