Air Europa Launches Three Weekly Direct Flights Between Madrid and Johannesburg

The inaugural flight arrived at Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo International Airport on June 25, 2026, operated by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Representatives from Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), South African Tourism, and other aviation stakeholders were on hand to welcome the flight, which received a traditional ceremonial greeting, marking the official launch of the new route.

Air Europa will operate the route three times per week, providing a direct connection between Johannesburg and the Spanish capital. Passengers can conveniently connect to the airline's network covering Europe and Latin America via its hub in Madrid. This new route significantly expands air links between South Africa and Spain, further solidifying Johannesburg's position as one of Africa's leading international aviation gateways.

A complementary development to the new route is the interline agreement recently announced between Air Europa and South African carrier CemAir, effective June 23, 2026. Under this agreement, Air Europa passengers can book onward domestic and regional flights operated by CemAir on a single itinerary, with baggage checked through to the final destination. This improves connectivity beyond Johannesburg, providing seamless access to destinations across South Africa and neighboring countries.

The partnership complements Air Europa's connectivity strategy in southern Africa and underscores the importance of local airline partnerships in supporting long-haul international services. Travelers from Spain and Latin America can connect through Air Europa's global network to CemAir's regional operations, reaching destinations that would otherwise require separate bookings; South African passengers, in turn, can access Europe and the Americas more conveniently via Madrid.

The route offers South African travelers a direct option to Spain while opening up one-stop connections to Europe and Latin America. Madrid has become an increasingly important European gateway, particularly for travel to Spanish-speaking destinations in Central and South America, where Air Europa maintains an extensive long-haul network.

The launch of this service is also expected to support inbound tourism. Spain is a significant European source market for South Africa, and improved direct flight access is anticipated to drive growth in both leisure and business travel. Enhanced connectivity could also strengthen trade, investment, and cultural ties between the two countries.

The route is operated using the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, one of the most fuel-efficient long-haul aircraft currently in commercial service. Its long range, lower operating costs, and improved passenger comfort make it a popular choice for airlines launching new intercontinental routes.

The Johannesburg route marks another step in Air Europa's international expansion. The airline has already established operations in Europe and the Americas, and Johannesburg becomes its first scheduled destination in sub-Saharan Africa, reflecting growing confidence in the South African market.

Previously, Air Belgium launched direct passenger services between Brussels and Johannesburg in 2022, but the route faced financial challenges. In September 2023, Air Belgium announced it would terminate all scheduled passenger services to Johannesburg by October 2023. Now, with direct flights between Madrid and Johannesburg inaugurated and regional connectivity strengthened through the interline agreement with CemAir, passenger travel options are expected to improve, while supporting tourism, trade, and business links between southern Africa, Europe, and Latin America.
