AFRY to Conduct Feasibility Study for Upgrade of Norway’s Largest Pumped Storage Plant

Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 30, Statkraft has hired engineering and consulting firm AFRY to conduct a feasibility study to optimize operations at the Saurdal pumped storage power plant, the largest of its kind in Norway. The study will assess the possibility of converting the plant's existing Francis turbines into pump turbines, which is expected to double its capacity to store surplus renewable energy. This upgrade aims to improve energy reliability during peak demand periods.

Currently, the Saurdal plant has an installed capacity of 640MW and produces around 1,400GWh of energy annually. The conversion is part of a broader effort to enhance the efficiency of renewable energy storage and ensure reliable power supply when demand peaks.

Ernst Zeller, Acting Head of Hydropower at AFRY, emphasized the significance of Norway's hydropower potential, stating: "Norway has outstanding hydropower resources. We are proud to contribute our expertise and advanced technology insights gained from similar projects in other markets to enhance the efficiency and reliability of the Saurdal pumped storage plant."

Christopher Klepsland, Country Manager of AFRY in Norway and Managing Director of Advansia, also highlighted the project's importance, saying: "This is a flagship project for us. The Saurdal power plant was commissioned between 1985 and 1986 and utilizes water resources from Lake Blåsjø, Norway’s largest reservoir, using the height difference to generate power.
