en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Port Authority of Pasaia (APP) recently announced an investment of €1.7 million to renovate the railway tunnel connecting the port with the Lezo-Rentería station, aiming to add international gauge and enhance rail freight capacity.

According to the APP official website, this tunnel is one of four railway connections in the Gipuzkoa port area, measuring 375 meters in length and featuring a single-track conventional gauge (ancho convencional). Currently, approximately 1,250 trains pass through the tunnel annually, primarily transporting vehicles to the Noatum-UECC vehicle terminal, one of the port's main cargo flows.
The project includes laying international gauge (ancho internacional) to prepare for European standard-gauge trains, with the potential to increase freight volume on this track.
APP Chairperson Izaskun Goñi stated that upon completion, the international gauge freight volume via Lezo is expected to increase, supporting the port's strategic goal of raising the proportion of rail-arriving cargo and strengthening the logistics system of the Atlantic Arc.
The renovation is being carried out by Comsa and is scheduled to take three months.
