en.Wedoany.com Reported - A special committee of the Malaysian Parliament is reviewing the rare earth supply agreement between Lynas Rare Earths (ASX:LYC) and the U.S. Pentagon. The committee convened on July 16, 2026, to assess Lynas's role in the U.S. defense supply chain and its implications for Malaysia's foreign policy and strategic minerals industry.
Lynas is one of only two rare earth miners outside China, with operations in Western Australia and Malaysia. In March 2026, the company signed a $96 million (approximately A$138 million) supply agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense to provide light and heavy rare earth oxide products produced by Lynas, with a floor price of $110 per kilogram for neodymium-praseodymium oxide.
The parliamentary committee recommended that the Malaysian government formulate clear foreign investment policies to protect national interests and security, and will issue an official position statement within two weeks. This review adds a new geopolitical dimension to Lynas's supply agreement, indicating that critical minerals are significantly influencing the national security policy direction of Southeast Asian countries.
