British Columbia, Canada advances Vancouver Island's first large-scale battery energy storage project
en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Government of British Columbia, Canada, along with the provincial utility BC Hydro, is advancing Vancouver Island's first utility-scale battery energy storage project in North Cowichan, aimed at enhancing power supply reliability and preparing for the region's growing electricity demand. The project will construct a large-scale battery energy storage system to improve grid stability and clean energy integration capacity.
BC Hydro is actively promoting the application of battery energy storage technology across the province. Recently, companies have successfully included their battery energy storage products in the qualified supplier list through BC Hydro's rigorous certification process, enabling eligible customers to access relevant incentive policies. BC Hydro updated its energy storage subsidy policy in April 2026, requiring participating customers to coordinate with grid response to receive the maximum subsidy amount.
As Vancouver Island's first utility-scale battery energy storage facility, the North Cowichan project will provide critical grid regulation capabilities for the region, support renewable energy integration, and address peak-hour electricity demand. BC Hydro has been continuously expanding its energy storage investments in recent years, viewing them as a key measure to achieve clean energy transition and ensure power supply security.
