VS Code 1.129, released on July 15, supports Windows, Linux, and Mac platforms and can be downloaded from code.visualstudio.com. In this update, Microsoft has rearchitected how agent sessions work in VS Code around the agent host. The agent host is a dedicated process that runs agent frameworks—including Claude, Copilot, and Codex—based on the Agent Host Protocol (AHP). Since sessions run in their own process, the same session can simultaneously connect and render to multiple VS Code windows. The Copilot agent in the agent host is powered by the Copilot SDK, ensuring its behavior and functionality are consistent with Copilot CLI, the standalone GitHub Copilot app, and other Copilot products. The agent host is being rolled out to users in the editor window and the Agents window, and can be enabled via the chat.agentHost.enabled setting.

The Agents window displays conversations with agents, along with a details area for generated files and changes. This version introduces a redesigned editor panel that merges the editor and details area into a single docked panel with a shared tab bar. This makes reviewing agent work feel more like operating in the main editor rather than switching between different panels.

Other new features and improvements in VS Code 1.129 include: users can prefix chat messages with ! to execute their content as terminal commands, applicable to agent host sessions including the editor and Agents window; developers can use the bring-your-own-key (BYOK) model when selecting the Copilot framework running on the agent host; and a preview of the modernized VS Code user interface is available, updating the look and feel of the editor workbench, currently as an experimental feature enabled via the workbench.experimental.modernUI setting.
