NTPC Subsidiary Signs 50 MW LNG Power Project Agreement

en.Wedoany.com Reported - NVVN, a wholly owned subsidiary of India's National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), has signed an agreement to develop a 50 MW liquefied natural gas (LNG) power project at Hopetown, Sri Vijaya Puram, in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

NTPC announced the news via social media on Wednesday without providing further details. According to multiple reports citing government statements, India's Ministry of Power has recently approved the power purchase agreement and gas supply agreement for the LNG power project, which is expected to include a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU).

Reports indicate that Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) will be responsible for developing the regasification infrastructure and supplying LNG to the project, which is scheduled to commence operations in August 2028. IOCL is a shareholder in Petronet LNG, India's largest LNG importer, alongside GAIL, ONGC, and BPCL.

In 2024, NTPC stated it was collaborating with Petronet LNG to supply liquefied natural gas to one of its power plants. According to information on Indian Oil Corporation's website, IOCL has booked regasification capacities of 3.75 million tonnes per annum (mtpa), 3 mtpa, 1 mtpa, and 0.43 mtpa at the Dahej, Dhamra, Jafrabad, and Kochi LNG terminals, respectively.

India imports LNG through eight facilities with a total capacity of approximately 52.7 mtpa. These facilities include Petronet LNG's terminals, Shell's Hazira terminal, as well as the Dabhol LNG, Ennore LNG, Mundra LNG, and Dhamra LNG terminals.
