Greece Proposes 800W Balcony Solar PV and Home Energy Storage

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Since 2020, over 37,400 self-consumption renewable energy systems have been commissioned in Greece, with a total installed capacity of 1,070 MW. The Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy recently proposed a reform package covering development, installation, and grid connection to further promote self-consumption energy, with a public consultation concluding earlier this month.

For the first time, the proposal permits balcony solar PV systems with a maximum capacity of 800 watts. These systems are not allowed to feed electricity back into the grid and must meet safety requirements to protect the grid and other electrical installations. The consultation also includes allowing standalone residential buildings to install battery energy storage systems for self-consumption only. Regarding collective self-consumption, the reform aims to promote collaborative models within buildings such as apartment blocks and residential complexes, while allowing third parties to develop self-consumption systems on behalf of consumers and introducing participants supplied by different electricity retailers into the same self-consumption scheme.

In addition to regulatory adjustments, the ministry plans to accelerate the deployment of smart meters for self-consumption systems and establish an electronic self-consumption registry to digitize administrative procedures and improve data exchange among stakeholders. The amendment also seeks to address shortcomings identified in the implementation of the current framework by clarifying the execution and settlement processes for self-consumption schemes.

The amendment follows Law 5299/2026 enacted in May this year, which established renewable energy acceleration zones and transposed the EU RED III Directive. The Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy stated that strengthening energy democracy through self-consumption remains a government priority. Data shows that Greece added approximately 1.9 GW of new solar capacity in 2025, bringing the cumulative total solar installed capacity to around 11.5 GW.
