Launched earlier this month, the project integrates utility-scale energy storage with an AI data center and a district heating network, creating a multifaceted development at a key grid interconnection hub.
Located at Laufenburg, where Swiss, German, and French transmission networks converge with 41 cross-border lines, the 20,000-square-meter facility is designed to enhance energy reliability and support regional sustainability. Construction began after securing regulatory approval, with commercial operations targeted for summer 2028. The project’s innovative approach combines advanced storage technology with data processing and heating solutions to maximize efficiency.
Raphael Schmid, Flexbase’s Chief Marketing Officer, stated: “The Swiss developer started building the technology center earlier this month after securing regulatory approval, with commercial operations scheduled for summer 2028.” While Schmid did not disclose the battery storage system supplier or precise investment costs, local reports from the Badische Zeitung suggest the project’s value may reach into the billions.
The redox flow battery system offers a sustainable solution for large-scale energy storage, capable of supporting grid stability and accommodating the region’s increasing demand for renewable energy integration. By colocating the storage system with an AI data center, the project optimizes energy use, leveraging the data center’s power needs alongside the storage capacity to balance grid demands.
