Wedoany.com Report-May 29, Jersey Telecom (JT) has entered the final phase of its multi-million-pound investment in a next-generation 5G mobile network, powered by Ericsson, with the first sites activated over the weekend of May 24-25, 2025, in St Ouen, Jersey. This milestone marks the Channel Islands as a leader in Europe for advanced mobile connectivity, enhancing digital infrastructure across the region.
The launch was celebrated at JT’s Network Operation Centre, where JT engineers collaborated with Ericsson’s Global Network Operations Centre via a live link. After extensive trials and optimization, the team successfully transitioned sites in St Ouen’s Area One from the legacy network to the new 5G infrastructure. Early tests indicate significant improvements in signal strength, coverage, and download speeds compared to the previous network.
“This investment positions Jersey as a hub for innovation across various sectors,” said Daragh McDermott, CEO of JT Group. “Networks are never complete; the work never stops because technology is always improving, so our focus will always be on enabling the technology of tomorrow, for our customers today.”
The rollout, part of a partnership with Ericsson initiated in 2023, will proceed in phases over several months, with full completion expected by the end of 2025. The network will deliver a 5G Standalone (SA) experience, a more advanced technology than the non-standalone 5G used by most operators. JT joins 60 global operators deploying 5G SA, supported by Ericsson’s technology across 183 networks in 77 countries. Combined with JT’s full fibre-to-home service, the network will provide seamless connectivity, positioning Jersey as one of the world’s most connected regions.
Katherine Ainley, Chief Executive of Ericsson UK and Ireland, stated: “Ericsson and JT share a vision for next-generation connectivity that creates new possibilities for people, businesses, and society. By investing in an end-to-end solution from Ericsson, JT is building a robust network with best-in-class coverage and performance.”
The advanced infrastructure will support faster, more reliable connections and enable new devices, services, and business models. This positions Jersey as a global hub for digital innovation, fostering economic growth and technological advancement across the Channel Islands. JT’s collaboration with Ericsson ensures the network meets current demands while preparing for future technological developments, benefiting both residents and businesses.
The project reflects JT’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge connectivity, supporting the digital economy, and enabling innovation. As the rollout progresses, the 5G SA network is expected to transform connectivity, enhancing user experiences and driving sustainable growth in the region.
