Wedoany.com Report-Jun 3, On May 29, 2025, Italy’s Ansaldo Energia and Uzbekistan’s Uzatom Atomic Energy Agency signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, to collaborate on advanced nuclear technologies and small modular reactors (SMRs). The agreement was formalized by Ansaldo Energia’s Senior Vice President of Public Affairs and Institutional Relations, Andrea Benveduti, and Uzatom Director Azim Akhmedkhadjaev, in the presence of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and Italy’s Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Piergabriele Papadia de Bottini.

The MoU outlines a strategic partnership focused on the design and construction of next-generation nuclear power plants, nuclear waste management solutions, and professional training programs. A key emphasis is placed on the development of small modular reactors, which are designed to offer flexible and efficient energy solutions. Ansaldo Energia, through its subsidiary Ansaldo Nucleare, contributes expertise in advanced nuclear technologies, including Generation III and IV reactors, as well as fusion reactor systems. The collaboration also includes joint initiatives to enhance technical skills in the nuclear energy sector.

This agreement aligns with Uzbekistan’s broader efforts to expand its nuclear energy capabilities. In May 2024, Uzbekistan signed a contract for a 330 MW nuclear power plant in the Jizzakh region, based on six RITM-200N water-cooled reactor units. These reactors, adapted from technology used in nuclear-powered icebreakers, have a thermal power of 190 MW or electrical power of 55 MW and a service life of 60 years. The first unit is expected to become operational in late 2029, with subsequent units commissioned progressively.

Ansaldo Energia and Uzatom aim to leverage their combined expertise to advance nuclear energy solutions, prioritizing safety and innovation. The partnership is expected to strengthen Uzbekistan’s nuclear energy infrastructure while fostering technical cooperation and knowledge exchange between the two parties.
