Wedoany.com Report-Jun 3, The European Commission’s science service has updated its wheat yield forecasts for Romania, marking the second consecutive month of upward revisions. The latest estimate projects an average wheat yield of 4.97 tonnes per hectare, a 21% increase over the five-year average and an 8% improvement compared to 2024 results.

This forecast positions Romania as the European leader in wheat yield growth for 2025 relative to the 2020-2024 period. The significant rise is attributed to favorable agricultural conditions, including improved weather patterns for sowing and crop development across key regions.

In 2024, Romania produced 17.87 million tons of grain cereals, down from 20.5 million tons in 2023. Of this, wheat accounted for 9.29 million tons, compared to 9.6 million tons in 2023, marking the lowest grain output in a decade. Despite the challenges faced last year, the revised forecast signals a strong recovery for Romania’s wheat sector.

The anticipated increase in wheat yields is expected to bolster Romania’s grain production, supporting both domestic consumption and export markets. The country has been a key player in the European Union’s grain exports, with wheat and barley leading shipments in recent years. The improved outlook could enhance Romania’s contribution to regional food security and market stability.

The European Commission noted: “Farmers could obtain an average of 4.97 tonnes per hectare,” highlighting the potential for Romania to achieve record-high wheat yields in 2025.
