Wedoany.com Report-Jun 4, Purus, a maritime services provider for gas transport and offshore wind sectors, has ordered a new liquefied natural gas carrier (LNGC) from Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea. This addition brings the company’s total number of gas carriers under construction at Hyundai Group-affiliated shipyards to ten.
The newly ordered vessel is a 180,000 cbm dual-fuel LNG carrier, scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2027. Upon delivery, it is expected to commence a long-term charter with an unnamed energy company. Purus stated that this order reinforces its focus on supporting the use, supply, and transport of cleaner fuels as part of the global energy transition.
Purus emphasized: “Designed for long-term efficiency and regulatory compliance, the vessel will surpass EEDI Phase III requirements and incorporate performance-optimizing features – including a twin skeg highly optimized hull design – to enhance fuel economy and propulsion efficiency.”
The ship will feature advanced dual-fuel propulsion technology and is configured to use natural gas boil-off as fuel. It is projected to achieve up to a 25% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and around an 85% decrease in nitrogen oxide emissions compared to vessels operating on conventional marine fuels.
Additionally, the use of LNG allows for minimal sulfur oxide output and a significant reduction in particulate matter, contributing to cleaner operations, particularly in designated emission control areas.
In a related development, Purus recently began construction on a medium-sized gas carrier (MGC) intended for transporting ammonia. This project further demonstrates the company’s strategic direction toward supporting lower-emission energy solutions across its fleet operations.
