Symbiosis members Google and McKinsey have committed to removing over 335,000 tonnes of carbon over 10 years, marking Symbiosis's first commitment in the agroforestry sector; Tencent has committed to removing 300,000 tonnes of carbon, representing its first offtake agreement outside China.
The project will restore 6,000 hectares of degraded land in the Sulawesi region of Indonesia by planting fruit trees and timber forests. The trees store carbon while also generating sustainable income for local communities. Sulawesi is one of the most biodiverse and carbon-rich regions in the world, but shifting cultivation, soil erosion, and invasive species have led to land degradation, resulting in fire-prone grasslands and barren soils that undermine the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.
Thryve's agroforestry model employs a stratified planting system to restore landscapes, diversifying farmer income across multiple time horizons, with returns often exceeding carbon revenue alone. The model builds on decades of field-validated work by Dr. Willie Smits of the Masarang Foundation. The upfront costs of clearing invasive weeds and planting new trees exceed what landowners can bear independently, making long-term offtake commitments critical to unlocking the financing needed for large-scale ecological restoration.
