en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 12, DP World Callao initiated the trial operation of its shore power system at the South Terminal of the Port of Callao in Peru, completing the first connection of a container ship to the grid. Located at Berth 3 of the South Terminal, the system can supply power to docked vessels using renewable energy certified by I-REC.
The first vessel connected to the shore power system was the CMA CGM PLATINUM, a container ship operated by France's CMA CGM Group. Built in 2025, the vessel measures 335 meters in length, has a capacity of approximately 13,100 TEUs, and features a methanol-ready design. During the connection, the ship can shut down its auxiliary engines and instead rely on the terminal's grid to power lighting, refrigeration, ventilation, and onboard equipment.
The shore power system at the Port of Callao includes a dedicated substation and independent transformers. DP World previously stated that the power demand for the shore power system is comparable to the existing electrical load of the South Terminal, necessitating separate power supply and distribution facilities. The relevant infrastructure was reserved during the construction of the Bicentennial Terminal expansion project at the Port of Callao, with the shore power infrastructure entering the implementation phase in 2025.
DP World estimates that the shore power system will reduce more than 6,300 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions annually, cutting approximately 30.3 tonnes per vessel per port call, while also lowering nitrogen oxide, sulfur oxide, and particulate matter emissions by over 90% during vessel berthing, in addition to reducing port-area noise caused by auxiliary engine operation.
Currently, approximately 80% of vessels calling at Berth 3 of the South Terminal are equipped with shore power interface compatibility. Of the seven vessels that call at the Port of Callao weekly on the Peru-Asia route, it is expected that four will gradually be able to connect to the shore power system.
The system is part of DP World Callao's port decarbonization investment plan, valued at approximately $105 million, which also includes the electrification of quay cranes and yard cranes, electric port vehicles, and charging infrastructure. The South Terminal currently has a quay length of 1,050 meters and a terminal area of approximately 40 hectares, capable of accommodating three large container ships simultaneously.
The Port of Callao has launched the trial operation of the shore power system. After completing connection tests across different vessel types, load verification, and operational procedure refinement, DP World will gradually expand the use of the shore power system among vessels on the Peru-Asia route.
