en.Wedoany.com Reported - Emirates District Cooling (Emicool) has unveiled its net-zero operations roadmap, targeting net-zero emissions by 2050. The roadmap is underpinned by data-driven analysis and technical modeling, establishing a decarbonization pathway within clearly defined operational boundaries.

Using 2023 as the baseline year with emissions of 183,423 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e), the roadmap covers Scope 1, Scope 2, and relevant Scope 3 emissions. To this end, Emicool has secured approximately $31.6 million in dedicated funding for energy optimization initiatives through 2027, as part of the company's broader green financing strategy. The roadmap sets an interim target approved by the board: a 10% reduction from the 2023 baseline by 2035. Further significant emissions reductions are expected after 2035 as low-carbon technologies mature and the UAE's energy mix transitions toward cleaner sources.

Emicool plans to achieve approximately 90% emissions reduction by 2050, with the remaining hard-to-abate emissions to be neutralized only after all feasible direct reduction measures have been implemented. Dr. Adib El Moubadder, CEO of Emicool, stated that for infrastructure companies, sustainability has shifted from optional to essential, and this roadmap reflects the company's long-term commitment to transforming district cooling into a cleaner, smarter, and more efficient industry. He noted that the roadmap outlines a phased approach to emissions reduction, including enhancing operational efficiency, optimizing plants and distribution networks, advancing digital transformation, integrating renewable energy, and introducing future low-carbon technologies.

As a key component of sustainable urban development, district cooling offers higher energy efficiency compared to conventional cooling systems, helping residential, commercial, and mixed-use developments reduce energy consumption. Emicool's roadmap embeds sustainability across all operational aspects and aligns initiatives within its operational control with broader industry drivers, including continued grid decarbonization, advancements in cooling and energy efficiency technologies, and increased availability of low-carbon solutions. These measures are expected to collectively accelerate long-term emissions reduction.

Emicool currently supports multiple residential, commercial, and mixed-use developments in Dubai, operating 20 district cooling plants with a connected capacity exceeding 306,000 refrigeration tons (RT). The roadmap will be reviewed every five years to allow adjustments based on technological developments, regulatory changes, and operational progress.
