Baker Hughes: U.S. and Canada rig count falls by 8 to 804 in week ended Aug. 21

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Data released by Baker Hughes Inc. shows that for the week ended Aug. 21, the total North American rig count fell by 8 to 804, offsetting the increase of 8 rigs from the prior week. The U.S. market saw a decrease of 5 rigs this week, bringing the total to 588, which is 50 rigs higher than the same period last year. Among these, offshore rigs decreased by 2 to 10, inland water rigs decreased by 1 to 2, and land rigs decreased by 2 to 576, with land rigs up 53 rigs compared to the same period in 2025.

By drilling target, oil-directed rigs in the U.S. and its waters decreased by 3 this week to 452, gas-directed rigs stood at 127, down 1 from the prior week, and unclassified rigs decreased by 1 to 9. Among major oil and gas producing states, Texas saw the largest increase, adding 4 rigs this week to reach 281, which is 41 rigs more than the same period last year. New Mexico and Louisiana each decreased by 3 rigs this week, with current rig counts of 96 and 35, respectively. Wyoming decreased by 1 rig, leaving 9 rigs in operation.

The Canadian market saw a decrease of 3 rigs this week to 216, up 36 rigs from the same period last year. Among these, oil-directed rigs totaled 148, down 3 from the prior week; gas-directed rigs totaled 65, flat from the prior week; and unclassified rigs totaled 3, also flat from the prior week.
