Canada's CCA Calls for De-escalation of 50% Tariff Dispute
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 24, the Canadian Coatings Association (CCA) called on Canada and the United States to de-escalate their trade dispute and resume negotiations. The U.S. has imposed 50% tariffs on approximately CAD 28 billion worth of Canadian goods, and Canada plans to implement equivalent countermeasures starting September 8.
The latest round of trade talks was suspended on August 21. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that new conditions proposed by the U.S. in the final stage of negotiations lacked economic viability, prompting Canada to recall its negotiating team. The new tariffs took effect on August 22, covering goods such as clothing, cement, beer, and sporting goods exported from Canada to the U.S., and are stacked on top of existing tariffs on steel, aluminum, automobiles, and lumber.
The CCA believes that continued tariff escalation will affect cross-border raw material procurement and product distribution in the coatings, adhesives, sealants, and elastomers industries. The supply chains for resins, pigments, additives, solvents, and finished products in this sector span both Canada and the U.S. Tariffs and countermeasures could increase procurement costs and disrupt production schedules, with small and medium-sized enterprises bearing a more direct impact.
The Canadian government plans to impose reciprocal tariffs on U.S. goods, initially covering steel, dairy products, household appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronic products. The specific list of goods will be released before the measures take effect. Canada's coatings and related materials industry contributes over CAD 19 billion annually to the country's economy and supports more than 130,000 technical jobs.
