Wedoany.com Report-Jun 16, Construction has officially commenced on Dubai’s $5.6 billion Blue Line metro project, a major expansion of the city’s transport infrastructure. The line will extend 30 kilometers along a north-south bifurcated route and is expected to enhance urban connectivity across key residential and academic districts.

The project is being delivered by a consortium comprising Turkish construction firms Mapa and Limak, along with Chinese rail systems supplier CRRC. In addition to laying the track and installing auxiliary systems, the scope of work includes building a maintenance depot and a 1.3-kilometer viaduct crossing Dubai Creek. The Blue Line will be the first metro route to cross this geographic feature.
The new line will integrate with Dubai’s existing Green and Red metro lines, significantly increasing the city’s public transport capacity. It will feature 14 stations, including key hubs such as International City 1, 2, and 3, Dubai Silicon Oasis, and Academic City.
One of the most prominent features of the project is the International City 1 station, which will serve as an interchange with the city’s tram system. It is set to become the largest underground interchange in the Dubai Metro network, covering a floor area of 44,000 square meters. This station is designed to streamline transfers between metro and tram services, contributing to improved passenger flow.
The Blue Line will also be connected to the Dubai Tram and Metro Route 2020, an extension of the Red Line that serves key Expo and suburban areas. With this expansion, the total number of stations in Dubai’s metro network will increase to 78.
Daily ridership on the Blue Line is projected to reach 320,000 passengers by 2040, supporting the city’s long-term urban development and mobility goals. The line is expected to ease congestion, reduce travel times, and promote the use of public transportation across the emirate.
This infrastructure development reflects Dubai’s commitment to enhancing sustainable transportation and aligning with broader urban planning objectives.
