en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Ministry of Energy of Mongolia has launched a tender for five solar-plus-storage projects. These independent power producer (IPP) projects have a total solar capacity of 110 MW, paired with battery energy storage systems (BESS) totaling 52 MW/188 MWh.

The tender divides procurement activities into five sites, three located in western Mongolia and two in the eastern region. The government has identified and secured land for each auction site. The first site is in Bayankhongor Province, comprising 10 MW of solar and a 10 MW/20 MWh BESS; the second site is in Bayan-Ölgii Province, comprising 20 MW of solar and a 10 MW/40 MWh BESS, both to be developed on 60 hectares of land. The third site is in Uvs Province, comprising 40 MW of solar and a 20 MW/80 MWh project, to be developed on 100 hectares.
The fourth site is in Sükhbaatar Province, where a 10 MW solar facility and a 2 MW/8 MWh BESS will be built on 35 hectares; the fifth site is in Dornod Province, where a 30 MW solar facility and a 10 MW/40 MWh BESS will be developed on 90 hectares. Selected developers will be responsible for the design, financing, construction, operation, and maintenance of the solar-plus-storage facilities under an IPP framework. Each site will be connected to an existing grid substation.
The tender begins with an expression of interest phase, where developers are eligible to apply for both western and eastern plots simultaneously. The Ministry of Energy of Mongolia stated that it reserves the right to procure through a single competitive auction covering all sites, or through separate competitive auctions targeting individual sites or groups of sites. The deadline for submitting expressions of interest is August 16, with the request for proposals currently scheduled for the second half of this year.
According to data published by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Mongolia's cumulative installed solar capacity stood at 129 MW by the end of 2025, down from 143 MW reported at the end of 2024.
