Wedoany.com Report-Jun 23, TotalEnergies has announced plans for the Castle Hills Solar Farm, a 49MW solar facility combined with a 5MW battery energy storage system (BESS), to be located south of Birmingham Airport in the West Midlands. The project aims to generate clean electricity sufficient to power approximately 14,000 homes annually, enhancing regional energy reliability and supporting local decarbonization efforts.

The company is engaging in preliminary discussions with Birmingham Airport to explore options for supplying energy directly to the airport, aligning with its sustainability objectives. TotalEnergies emphasized that the project will make “a meaningful contribution” to net zero goals while delivering lasting benefits for the community and environment.

The proposal includes significant biodiversity initiatives, such as new planting and habitat enhancements across the site. Additionally, TotalEnergies plans to establish a £40,000 annual Community Benefit Fund to support local groups and initiatives throughout the solar farm’s 40-year operational period.

To gather community input, TotalEnergies has launched a public consultation, featuring a dedicated website and an upcoming in-person exhibition. This feedback will inform the planning application to be submitted to Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council.

A TotalEnergies spokesperson stated: “Castle Hills Solar Farm represents a significant step in the West Midlands' journey towards a low-carbon future. This carefully considered proposal combines sustainable energy generation with long-term environmental and community benefits. We are proud to be advancing one of Britain’s most ambitious solar projects and look forward to collaborating with our neighbours to refine our plan and seize opportunities.”

The Castle Hills Solar Farm underscores TotalEnergies’ commitment to advancing renewable energy infrastructure, fostering community engagement, and contributing to the West Midlands’ sustainable energy goals.
