Stadler US Wins Long-Term Train Maintenance Contract with Austin's CapMetro, Service Period Up to 2034

Starting from January 2027, Stadler will provide on-site technical support for CapMetro's existing 10 GTW diesel-powered articulated multiple units. The base period of the contract runs from 2027 to 2032, with two one-year renewal options, and if all options are exercised, the cooperation could be extended to 2034.

Under the agreement, Stadler will establish a 3-person local service team in Austin. The scope of work includes on-site technical support, engineering services, spare parts management, personnel training, and obsolescence support for discontinued older components. This contract is not a vehicle procurement but a long-term OEM service arrangement focused on extending the lifecycle and ensuring operational reliability of the existing fleet.

CapMetro's GTW vehicles have been in continuous operation since the launch of urban rail service in 2010 and currently primarily serve the Red Line commuter rail. As the vehicles age, electronic components, control systems, and some mechanical parts are increasingly facing discontinuation and extended supply lead times. During the contract period, Stadler will assist CapMetro in identifying alternative solutions and maintaining long-term availability of critical spare parts.

CapMetro's public contract records show that its existing commuter rail operations, dispatching, and maintenance main contract is held by Herzog Transit Services, valid until December 31, 2026; meanwhile, CapMetro previously signed an RDS software contract with Stadler Bussnang AG, which also expires at the end of 2026. The new agreement starts in January 2027, aligning in time with the existing related contract cycles.

The focus of the new service contract is not to replace daily train operations, but to bring manufacturer-level technical capabilities directly into the fleet's long-term maintenance system. Stadler will provide original equipment manufacturer engineering expertise and continuous support for technical upgrades, spare parts replacement, and system compatibility issues arising from vehicle aging, thereby improving the availability and operational stability of Red Line trains.

CapMetro is currently advancing Transit Plan 2035 and subsequent public transit system upgrades, and plans to continue adjusting rail and bus operations starting from January 2027. For the GTW fleet that has been in service for over 16 years, establishing an OEM technical support system lasting until 2032 and up to 2034 will serve as an important guarantee for the continued service of the existing rail vehicles.
