UK-based Pulpex's Glasgow Fibre Paper Bottle Factory Enters Production Preparation Phase

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Recently, UK sustainable packaging company Pulpex continues to advance construction of its new fibre paper bottle manufacturing facility at the Westway Industrial Park near Glasgow Airport. The factory has a floor area of approximately 87,000 square feet and a designed annual production capacity of up to 50 million fibre bottles. Robertson Construction Central West is responsible for design and construction. The main steel structure has now been completed, and the focus is shifting to mechanical and electrical system installation, interior fit-out, and the introduction of production equipment.

The project is Pulpex's first commercial-scale production facility. Pulpex previously conducted R&D, pilot production, and small-batch manufacturing primarily at its Sawston site in Cambridge. The new Glasgow factory is tasked with transitioning its fibre bottle technology from the trial and small-batch stage to industrial-scale mass production. Pulpex's currently disclosed scale-up production path includes its own factories and subsequent third-party manufacturing partnerships, and the new plant will become its first large-scale manufacturing node.

The project construction is supported by £62 million in Series D financing, of which the National Wealth Fund has invested £43.5 million in direct equity funding, the Scottish National Investment Bank has invested £10 million, and the remaining funds come from existing investors. The related financing is explicitly designated for building Pulpex's first commercial manufacturing plant and advancing the industrialisation of its fibre bottle technology. The new factory is planned to create approximately 35 to 36 permanent jobs.

Pulpex fibre bottles use sustainably sourced wood pulp as the primary raw material and are produced using a wet-moulded fibre process. The company states that the packaging structure contains no hidden plastic layers and can enter the ordinary paper and cardboard recycling system after use. Its existing partners include consumer goods companies such as Diageo, Unilever, and Kraft Heinz, with related collaborations mainly focused on packaging development for products in spirits, personal care, and food categories.

According to the latest project information from the main contractor, the Glasgow factory construction contract is valued at approximately £9 million and is scheduled for completion in September 2026. Pulpex previously expected the first products to enter the market after the factory opens and customer filling validation is completed. The company's long-term goal is to achieve a combined production capacity of 2 billion bottles per year by 2030 through its own and partnered manufacturing systems.
