Sinovac and Egypt's GENNVAX Launch Localized Polio Vaccine Technology Cooperation
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 28, Sinovac Biotech (Group) Co., Ltd. and Egypt's GENNVAX launched a Sabin strain inactivated poliovirus vaccine (sIPV) technology cooperation project in Beijing, marking the entry of the vaccine localization production cooperation previously signed by both parties into the concrete implementation stage. The project will carry out work in phases around the localized production of sIPV in Egypt, including production process alignment, quality management system integration, and personnel training. The production phase is planned to be located at the vaccine and biological products manufacturing base that GENNVAX is currently building in Egypt.
Sinovac and GENNVAX signed localization production agreements for influenza vaccine and Sabin strain inactivated poliovirus vaccine in June this year. Sinovac's official information shows that the cooperation covers influenza vaccine and sIPV, and is being advanced through technology transfer and localized production. Sinovac's sIPV has obtained World Health Organization prequalification. The technology cooperation launched in September will advance the localization arrangement at the agreement level to the stage of production process and quality system integration.
Vaccine production will rely on GENNVAX's manufacturing base located in the Ain Sokhna Industrial Zone of Egypt's Suez Canal Economic Zone. According to the Suez Canal Economic Zone Authority, the project held a groundbreaking ceremony in December 2025, with a total investment of approximately USD 150 million, covering an area of approximately 50,000 square meters, and has obtained Egypt's "Golden License." GENNVAX's latest published plant information shows that the base covers 49,042 square meters, with a designed annual production capacity of up to 270 million doses, and is currently planned to complete project construction by October 2027.
The base is equipped with facilities for vaccine production, warehousing and cold chain, quality control laboratories, utilities, and waste treatment. GENNVAX discloses that the base will introduce vaccine production technologies through multiple international technology partners; its product portfolio already includes inactivated poliovirus vaccine, and the production facilities are being built according to a phased expansion plan. The project's official website shows that the main construction began in February 2026, and subsequent work will continue to advance the construction of production facilities and the introduction of technology transfer projects.
This cooperation continues Sinovac's vaccine localization business in Egypt. Sinovac previously carried out local production cooperation for COVID-19 vaccines in Egypt and in 2022 assisted in building an automated vaccine cold storage facility; according to its official disclosure, the cold storage facility has a storage capacity of approximately 150 million doses. After the signing of the influenza and polio vaccine agreements in June 2026, the cooperation between the two parties further expanded to routine vaccine production. Following the launch of this sIPV technology project, process alignment, quality system development, and production personnel training will be advanced in sequence.
