en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 4, the main body construction of the new central platform for China's first offshore carbon injection and gas enhancement technology demonstration application project—the Dongfang 1-1 Gas Field—was completed, fully entering the commissioning stage. After the project is put into operation, it can sequester more than 1 million tons of carbon dioxide in subsea geological formations each year.

The Dongfang 1-1 Gas Field is China's first offshore self-operated gas field and also a representative offshore carbon-rich gas field. Since it was completed and put into operation in 2003, it has produced more than 50 billion cubic meters of gas cumulatively. As the gas field development enters the mid-to-late stage, carbon injection and gas enhancement technology is being demonstrated and applied in this gas field.

The new central platform weighs nearly 17,000 tons, stands more than 28 stories tall, and has a total deck area of over 10,000 square meters. It can capture and purify the carbon dioxide associated with extraction, then pressurize and reinject it into the formations, thereby both enhancing the recovery rate of difficult-to-extract natural gas and achieving permanent carbon dioxide sequestration.

Yu Fasong, head of the carbon dioxide capture, sequestration and utilization project at the Dongfang 1-1 Gas Field of CNOOC Hainan Company, introduced that the project has systematically built a full-chain closed-loop technology system for offshore carbon dioxide capture, purification, sequestration, and gas displacement for enhanced production. It is the world's first to use "low-temperature distillation + membrane separation" natural gas decarbonization technology, with key equipment fully localized. Energy consumption is reduced by 20% compared with traditional decarbonization processes, and natural gas recovery rate is increased by more than 12%.

The main body of the central platform will be shipped to the South China Sea after completing commissioning in Qingdao, and the jacket has already been installed in the Yinggehai area of the South China Sea. After the platform is put into use, it will be linked to 12 platforms including Dongfang 13-2 and Dongfang 29-1, accelerating the release of the large-scale carbon sequestration potential of offshore oil and gas wells and helping China build an offshore carbon dioxide capture and sequestration utilization base.
