en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 6, UK telecom operator Virgin Media O2 officially launched its new-generation 5G+ mobile communications network in Bristol, covering up to approximately 495,000 people. This deployment covers Bristol city center, Harbourside, Avonmouth and surrounding residential areas, using 5G standalone technology to provide mobile communications services to individual and business users with compatible devices and eligible plans. The operator confirmed that the cities and towns covered by its 5G+ deployment plan have all achieved at least 90% outdoor network coverage.

O2 UK Activates 5G+ Across Bristol Under £700m Mobile Transformation Plan

The 5G+ service launched in Bristol this time uses a standalone architecture and no longer relies on the existing 4G network core architecture to provide 5G access services. The operator positions it as a new-generation mobile network for individual and business customers, offering higher data transmission speeds, lower communication latency and higher connection reliability. The company has not yet disclosed the number of base stations involved in this Bristol deployment, the specific frequency band configuration, actual download speeds or the additional network capacity.

The new service is available to O2 users with compatible devices, eligible plans and valid SIM cards, with no additional charge for 5G+ usage. Some users need to update their SIM cards or switch to eSIMs, with specific access conditions determined by device and tariff configuration. This network launch covers the city's commercial center, port surroundings and residential areas, and relevant users can verify service availability at their location through the operator's network coverage query system.

The Bristol network upgrade is part of Virgin Media O2's £700 million mobile network transformation plan implemented in 2026. This funding is directed at mobile communications infrastructure across the UK and is not a separate investment amount for Bristol. The transformation plan includes building and upgrading macro base stations, deploying small cells, upgrading existing 4G and 5G equipment, introducing additional mobile communications spectrum, and implementing network automation upgrades. The operator also plans to deploy more than 1,000 Giga Sites nationwide that integrate multiple frequency bands and different radio access technologies.

According to the operator's 2026 network construction schedule, subsequent infrastructure upgrades will also involve sports venues, transport hubs, railways, major roads, city centers and areas with weak existing mobile network signals. The company also plans to reconfigure existing 3G spectrum for 4G and 5G networks, and to use existing fixed communications networks to provide mobile base station backhaul connections at eligible sites. This Bristol launch is part of the nationwide 5G standalone expansion plan.
