India's Bharat Petroleum Awards Pre-Order for 100 kW Wave Energy Project in Mumbai
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 29, Sweden's Eco Wave Power confirmed that it has received its first wave energy project purchase order from India's Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to conduct a site assessment at the Jawahar Dweep offshore oil terminal in Mumbai. The two parties had previously planned to build a 100 kW wave energy pilot installation at the terminal. This order covers the initial technical feasibility study of the project, with the site assessment scheduled to be completed within four months of the order being issued.

The procurement work includes preparing a detailed site assessment plan and implementation schedule, conducting marine meteorological and hydrological condition studies, and submitting a final site assessment report. The study site is located at Bharat Petroleum's existing offshore oil terminal. The technical assessment will examine the deployment conditions for Eco Wave Power's onshore wave energy power generation system, taking into account the terminal's existing infrastructure and local marine conditions.
In accordance with the cooperation memorandum of understanding signed by both parties in February 2025, after the site assessment is completed, the project is planned to proceed to the deployment phase of the 100 kW pilot installation. Bharat Petroleum is responsible for regulatory approvals, engineering permits, and land use permits, while Eco Wave Power is responsible for providing wave energy conversion technology, conducting technical studies, and optimizing power generation efficiency. The two parties also agreed in the agreement to explore wave energy project development in other regions of India.
The proposed Eco Wave Power technology can utilize existing coastal structures such as breakwaters, piers, and jetties to install wave energy collection devices, with supporting energy conversion equipment arranged on the shore side. This site study will provide an assessment basis for determining whether to use existing terminal facilities for the Mumbai pilot project and for carrying out subsequent technical design and installation.
The 2025 cooperation agreement was signed by Chandrasekhar N, Head of Research and Development at Bharat Petroleum, and Inna Braverman, Chief Executive Officer of Eco Wave Power, with India's Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri and others attending the signing event. The 2026 site assessment order is the first actual procurement execution step under this agreement.
