en.Wedoany.com Reported - On November 5, the Bucharest municipal government in Romania launched a tender for the procurement of 79 new trams, with an estimated project value of approximately EUR 262 million. The tendered vehicles are approximately 36 meters long and are required to have the capability to operate without overhead contact lines. This procurement is part of Bucharest's urban public transport vehicle renewal program, with funding involving the Bucharest-Ilfov Regional Development Program for 2021-2027 and non-repayable EU funding support.

According to the tender technical requirements, the vehicles must also be adapted to the operating conditions of Bucharest's existing tram lines, involving technical parameters such as vehicle gauge, axle load, turning radius, platform dimensions, and power supply facilities.

The vehicle procurement is linked to Bucharest's tram network renovation program. Previously, Bucharest had arranged the modernization of approximately 50 kilometers of tram tracks, with works involving track structure renewal, line facility improvements, and depot upgrades. In April 2026, the European Investment Bank announced a loan of approximately EUR 266 million to Bucharest to support the tram network upgrade, with related plans including track renovation, new vehicle procurement, and depot facility upgrades, and the works are expected to be completed by 2030.

After the new vehicles enter operation, the depots will need to be adapted to the corresponding parking and maintenance conditions, including maintenance bays, repair equipment, and vehicle power supply facilities. Track renovation also needs to be technically matched with the new vehicles' axle load, body dimensions, and operating performance. Vehicle procurement and infrastructure renovation are interrelated but independently implemented projects.

The tender for the 79 trams had previously entered the procurement preparation stage and received approximately RON 434 million in non-repayable funding support
