en.Wedoany.com Reported - On November 3, the Spanish Cabinet approved the launch of a tender for a €48.4 million (excluding VAT) expansion project at the Port of Málaga. The project includes extending Berth 9 by approximately 87 meters, constructing a new 263-meter-long Berth 8, and creating more than 70,000 square meters of additional multipurpose operating area through reclamation of the harbor basin. The project will use reinforced concrete caisson structures to build the new berths, increasing the port's solid bulk cargo handling and storage capacity while expanding its ability to accommodate container vessels.

The main quay structures will adopt reinforced concrete caisson construction. The works include reclamation of part of the harbor basin, construction of caisson foundations and quay walls, and the creation of more than 70,000 square meters of new operating area behind the quay for cargo storage, handling, and internal port transport. The new area will primarily serve bulk cargo related to the agricultural and food industries, meeting the growing storage and transshipment demand for goods such as grain and feed ingredients.

The existing harbor basin and breakwater structures will also be modified. The works include demolishing the north and south breakwaters of the fishing harbor basin, as well as part of the west breakwater structure, along with removing part of the wave-deflecting structure of the existing quay wall and part of the rock armor revetment on the north side of the Berth 9 operating area, to make space for the new berth layout and site reclamation. The related demolition, marine construction, and reclamation works need to be coordinated with the port's existing operations and navigation arrangements.

This expansion project has been included in the 2026–2030 investment plan of the Port Authority of Málaga, and the port authority approved the relevant project proposal in July 2026. The previously proposed estimated construction period for the project is approximately 27 months.
