Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 13, PORR, a construction company, has been awarded two contracts worth over €532 million ($617.57 million) by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe, Poland’s railway infrastructure operator. The contracts focus on modernizing railway lines 108 and 104 to improve transportation networks in southeast Poland.
The two contracts are aimed at enhancing rail transport connections in south-eastern Poland.
For line 108, PORR will modernize the 80km stretch from Jasło to Nowy Zagórz, enhancing connectivity toward the Bieszczady Mountains. The project includes upgrading 18 stations and stops, constructing six new stops, replacing 78 sets of points, and rebuilding 80 level crossings. A notable feature is the construction of a 1,650m tunnel in Krosno’s urban area, with 330m excavated using the cut-and-cover method. The project also involves building three railway tunnels and three road viaducts. Completion is expected within 44 months, with trains operating on the upgraded line by the end of 2028.
Karl-Heinz Strauss, PORR’s CEO, stated: “Polish railway construction is among the most dynamic in Europe. We are delighted to be making an important contribution to modernising the railways with our technical know-how – especially now, where we can apply our expertise to improving transport links in the south-east and strengthening the infrastructure near the border.”
For line 104, PORR, in partnership with Trakcja System, will upgrade the Rabka Zaryte to Fornale section in the Małopolska region, with a contract value of €132 million, of which PORR holds a 90.5% share. The 15km project will enable train speeds up to 120km/h, featuring electrification and new platforms at key stops. It includes 66 engineering structures, such as nine railway bridges, four road bridges, five viaducts, and an underpass at Mszana Dolna station. To enhance safety, 11 level crossings will be modernized, and up to 16 existing crossings may be replaced with parallel road systems to improve traffic flow. This project is slated for completion by the third quarter of 2027.
PORR will apply its expertise in design, planning, and construction to deliver these projects, enhancing Poland’s railway infrastructure. The modernization efforts are expected to improve connectivity, support regional economic growth, and provide efficient transportation solutions in southeast Poland.
