Wedoany.com Report-Dec.17, Omantel has signed an agreement with UK-based Archangel Lightworks, a specialist in optical and laser communications, to advance satellite and optical communication services in the region.

The partnership creates a framework for integrating Archangel Lightworks’ advanced optical and laser ground station technologies into Omantel’s existing network infrastructure. The collaboration seeks to position Oman as a key center for high-capacity satellite communications and robust digital connectivity networks.

This initiative developed through the Smart Industry Initiative, a cooperative effort involving the British Omani Society, BSG International, and Oxford Science Enterprises. As the lead investor in Archangel Lightworks, Oxford Science Enterprises played a facilitating role in establishing the agreement.

The companies have outlined a phased proof-of-concept program set to begin in 2026. Initial activities will include testing the performance of Archangel Lightworks’ TERRA-M optical ground station through data reception from experimental satellites. Additional explorations will cover Ground Station as a Service offerings for private satellite operators, as well as hybrid trials combining radio frequency and optical links.

These steps will support the development of integrated service models that incorporate Archangel Lightworks’ ground stations and laser technologies within Omantel’s systems. The partnership also encompasses joint research and development efforts focused on future advancements, such as high-throughput optical systems and direct ground-to-ground optical connections.

Yousef bin Nasser Al Azizi, Director General of Strategic Planning for Technology and Innovation at Omantel, stated: This collaboration represents an important step in the space technology sector, aiming to redefine global communication architecture with Oman at the heart of this transformation. By integrating Archangel Lightworks’ leading optical technologies with Omantel’s infrastructure, we aim to build seamless bridges between space networks and ground systems. This partnership not only enhances Oman’s role as a high-capacity digital communications hub, but also reflects our commitment to creating a scalable, secure, and sustainable communications future, aligned with our vision, partnerships, and continuous innovation in line with Oman Vision 2040.

Richard Johansson, CEO of Archangel Lightworks, commented: This collaboration with Omantel represents a key step toward our vision of building hybrid satellite and ground networks capable of delivering flexible communication solutions at scale. Through our joint program in Oman, we look forward to integrating the TERRA-M optical ground station and our broader suite of technologies with Omantel’s existing infrastructure, demonstrating how wireless laser communications can be deployed in partnership with ground networks to add flexibility and capacity, while fostering innovation and growth.

Jim Wilkinson, CEO for Finance at Oxford Science Enterprises, added: This agreement between Omantel and Archangel Lightworks marks a milestone in the future of global communications. As part of the Smart Industry Initiative, we are pleased to see UK-founded innovation applied in Oman, helping to build stronger links between the two countries and pushing the boundaries of communication technologies to new horizons.

The initiative highlights practical cooperation in deploying next-generation connectivity solutions that combine space-based and terrestrial systems. Optical and laser technologies offer potential for higher data rates and enhanced security compared to traditional radio frequency methods.

By establishing local testing and integration capabilities, the partnership supports knowledge transfer and infrastructure development tailored to regional requirements.

Future joint services could enable expanded support for satellite operators while contributing to resilient national digital networks.

Overall, the agreement fosters technological progress and international collaboration in building efficient, high-performance communication ecosystems.
