Wedoany.com - Recently, German materials manufacturer Covestro and US energy technology company Rondo Energy jointly held a groundbreaking ceremony for their innovative Rondo Heat Battery (RHB) project at Covestro's production site in Brunsbüttel, Germany.

The project plans to build a thermal energy storage system with a capacity of 100 megawatt-hours (MWh), expected to be operational by the end of 2026. The technology utilizes excess low-cost renewable electricity from the grid to charge the battery, storing energy as heat in specially designed bricks, and continuously provides high-temperature steam for industrial processes, aiming to replace the currently used natural gas-based steam generation method. Supported by Breakthrough Energy Catalyst and the European Investment Bank (EIB), the project is expected to meet approximately 10% of the site's steam demand after commissioning, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 13,000 tons annually.
