Recently, contractors have commenced work on a major residential development near Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow, known as the Albion project. Upon completion, the project is expected to provide 160 homes, aiming to address the shortage of affordable housing in the city.
This affordable housing project, located on Edmiston Drive, is supported by £21 million in funding from Glasgow City Council. It is being built by the JR Group, designed by Graeme Nicholls Architects, and will transform a brownfield site previously used as a matchday car park. The homes will be a mix of social housing and mid-market rent properties, all managed by the Wheatley Group.
Graeme Nicholls, the project's designer, stated: "Our goal in creating the Albion project is to establish a place that is deeply connected to the Ibrox neighbourhood. We studied the area's character and the site's history, drawing inspiration from the curved structure, arched windows, and the light rhythm of red brickwork of the former dog racing stadium that once stood here. These elements resonate with both the nearby traditional tenement buildings and Ibrox Stadium's iconic Main Stand."
The project's design draws architectural elements from the original Albion Greyhound Stadium and the protected Main Stand of Ibrox Stadium. The main structures consist of two U-shaped buildings, featuring facades with ordered brick bay window details and arched window designs. This affordable housing project not only aims to meet housing needs but also focuses on embodying the community's historical context and local character in its architectural form.
